Neighborhood Notes from the CWNA President Greetings Neighbors! This message arrives to your computer at a very busy time, so I will try and keep this short. The November association elections were held for two officer positions and for all five of the at-large CWNA Board members. I am pleased to announce that we added new people to both the board and at-large members, which is a good sign of sustainability. Rusty Smith has moved from an at-large position and into the Vice President position. Deborah Slakes went from a subcommittee position and into the Secretary position. New at-large members include Chris Christie, Birger Pahl, and Else Ankel and join returning Karen Martinsen and Dot Spransy for another year. Rounding out CWNA officers is yours truly and Leslie Fillingham as Treasurer. The addition of Birger has already jumped started our area communications by designing the new CWNA webpage. Please visit www.cambridgewoods.org and let us know what you think. I would like to especially thank Else for her past work as VP, her devotion to the Neighborhood Quality Team and involvement with Eastside Transportation Management Association, and University Neighborhood Association. She devotes a lot of her time advocating for Cambridge Woods and the surrounding area. I encourage others to join subcommittees so we can continue to position ourselves as a strong neighborhood association. The Eastside neighborhood groups hosted a Mayoral Brown Bag event recently that was very well attended. Many concerns regarding quality of life issues were raised and discussed. It was my impression that the mayor came with the thought that many of the issues previously reported are just part of living close to a large university setting. I think he may have left with the acknowledgement that residents feel very strong about their neighborhoods and expect that something needs to be done to improve their quality of life. The November meeting speaker consisted of an interesting discussion on the history of the relationship of the university and hospital and the neighborhood. The main topic of discussion was to look at an initiative that home-owners would put deed restrictions on their existing homes that would require that they remain owner occupied. This has been done with some homes in the neighborhood just east of us in the Mariners Neighborhood. There was interest in pursuing this by those in attendance and we will look into this in the coming year. If anyone knows someone in the legal profession with real estate experience or is interested in participating in such an initiative, please let us know. Looking towards the New Year, we invited Vince Bushell from Riverwest
Currents has agreed to speak at the January 18, 2005 general meeting. Vince is
also the Neighborhood Relations Project Manager for the River Revitalization
organization, and works on improving trails along the Milwaukee River. We are
hoping he can be of assistance to us in our desire for improving access to
Cambridge Woods and Oak Leaf Trail. Please share any ideas for speakers or
topics you would like to see at future meetings. Happy Holidays! |
