Neighborhood Notes from the CWNA President
January/February 2005

Greetings Neighbors!

I hope that everyone has made it through another winter and is looking forward to the seasonal change. By the time this reaches the intended readers, we will have celebrated the ending of winter with another great Fun & Games Team event at our annual Chili Fest. While many things may lay dormant during the winter months, many signs of rejuvenation are taking place in Cambridge Woods.

I am truly inspired by many of the actions I have witnessed over the past few months that demonstrate the sustainability of our neighborhood and organization. I would like to mention just a few of these actions that support this perspective. At the beginning of the winter season, our Fun and Games Team reached out once again and provided hand-knitted hats and gloves to school children at Hartford Avenue School. We also launched our own website (www.cambridgewoods.org ) along with a healthy membership drive. There have been crack downs on illegal parties, illegal rental practices in the area including Cambridge Woods, as well as home improvements made from the result of a neighborhood survey.

In addition, follow-up actions from recent general meetings are taking place. In May of last year we had a speaker from the Metropolitan Milwaukee Sewage District (MMSD) come and give a presentation that included information on rain barrels and downspout disconnects. Recently an opportunity came about for a grant that will provide materials and assistance with the implementation of rain barrels, rain gardens, and downspout disconnects. We were successfully awarded the grant and the barrels and program will be rolling out shortly. In November, our general meeting speaker was a planning consultant who provided information on putting deed restriction on homes that will retain owner occupied status of homes. This meeting inspired a member to purchase a troublesome neighboring rental property with the intent of putting a deed restriction on the property to ensure owner occupied status. Our last general meeting included a speaker who provided recommendations for neighborhood interest to enhance access to the Oak Leaf Trail and the Cambridge Woods natural area. Suggestions made at the meeting and previous meeting will be put in a preliminary plan outline and shared with a Milwaukee County Parks representative who was in attendance. There will be another opportunity for neighborhood comment on the document, which we plan to post on our website.

Other recent actions taking place is the development of Neighborhood Spotlight/Profile communication piece that includes neighborhood interviews that will be posted to our website and a volunteer to take over the monthly home sale report. The spotlight communication piece will be a great tool for making connections to the neighborhood and its residents and the monthly homes for sale report shares a task responsibility that is appreciated by many. All of these mentioned actions involve people, which I purposely kept nameless. I am truly encouraged to see people stepping up and getting involved. The individuals may be nameless, but collectively they represent our great neighborhood- Cambridge Woods. It is these types of actions and others not included in this message, but just as important, that demonstrate the vitality of our neighborhood that we can all be proud of and I thank you all!

May the cold and snow melt away and the spring breeze refresh us all!
