When our son’s rocking horse was stolen, we were angry, disheartened and felt somewhat vulnerable. We e-mailed a rather brusque-sounding message to neighbors, and to city and UWM officials. And although we didn’t find our missing rocking horse, what we did get back was a very good feeling.
Neighborhood contacts and officials expressed an interest in helping; and immediately got the ball rolling. Neighbors (including some student neighbors) e-mailed us or stopped as they walked by expressing dismay and condolences.
One invited us to a horse farm to let our son meet some real horses – he LOVED it. One came over with a small rocking zebra. One neighborhood family spotted a similar style rocking horse at a yard sale, mentioned our loss, and the family having the yard sale gave it to our son freely!
We have a newfound regard and good feeling for our neighborhood. We want to pass it on.
Thank you all!

Cambridge Woods Neighborhood Association is a member of the North Shore branch of the “Wild Ones”. This, now national, organization was started in the Milwaukee area. It promotes landscaping with native plants. It provides workshops at the Urban Ecology Center and facilitates a yearly rescue dig of native plants for its members. Members are allowed to remove native plants from an area which is slated for development.

Saturday, May 19, three CWNA members, equipped with shovels, buckets and bags, dug out about fifty woodland plants (Geranium, Trillium etc.). They brought them to the area of Cambridge Woods between the bike trail and the river. There they pulled out and bagged four large garbage bags with the invasive non-native plant Garlic Mustard. Afterward they replanted and watered the 50 new woodland plants at the Garlic Mustard sites.

This is an annual event. You can already sign up for 2008 with Else (964-4481). If there is interest, we will organize Garlic Mustard outings in the CW area.
