Vehicle License Plate Safety Tips

Protect your vehicle license plates and the annual  registration stickers.  Numerous stickers are being resold because proof of insurance is now required in Wisconsin to apply for current registration.

Check your license plate occasionally to ensure your current year license sticker  is attached.  Remove prior stickers before adding the current one.

Once you attach the current sticker- slice an X with a sharp razor blade so the sticker will not come apart in one piece.  Then cover it with clear fingernail polish.

Also a sturdy metal frame bolted to the  license plate discourages thieves from cutting the corner off your  plate in order to steal it.  Also security  screws are available through Bruce Scott, Community Liaison Officer at the 5th District Station.  Call Raymond Robakowski at 414-935-7258 or email at Rrobak@milwaukee.gov.   Theft of the entire license plate can be prevented by bolting a sturdy metal frame to it.  The frames can be purchased at most hardware stores, such as Lowe’s or Home Depot.

When either license plate or sticker are stolen, contact the 5th District Police Station immediately and file an incident report.  Then take the incident report to any Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Department to purchase another plate or sticker immediately.  It is illegal to drive without one and may result in a hefty fine of over $165.00 if stopped.
